Most businesses in Cameroon are invisible on Google. Not because Google dislikes them, but because nothing exists for Google to find. If your business lives entirely on Facebook and WhatsApp, then when a customer searches your name — or worse, searches for the service you offer — you simply are not there.
Here is how to fix that, in the order that actually produces results.
Step 1: Claim your Google Business Profile (free, and the biggest single win)
A Google Business Profile is what makes your business appear in Google Maps and in the local results box at the top of search. For a business with a physical location in Buea, Limbe or Douala, this is the highest-return thing you can do, and it costs nothing.
- Create the profile with your exact business name, address and phone number.
- Choose the most specific category available — "real estate agency" beats "business service".
- Add at least ten real photos. Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks.
- Fill in your opening hours, services and a full description.
- Verify the listing when Google sends the code.
Step 2: Get a real website on your own domain
Google needs something to rank. A Facebook page ranks poorly for service searches, and it does not belong to you — the page can be restricted at any moment and you lose everything.
A website on your own domain does three things at once: it gives Google content to index, it gives customers something to trust before they contact you, and it belongs to you permanently.
Domain tip for international ranking: if you want customers in the United States or Europe, use a .com domain rather than .cm. Country-code domains signal to Google that you serve that country specifically, which works against you when targeting abroad. If your customers are local, .cm is perfectly good.
Step 3: Understand what people actually search
The single most common SEO mistake is writing about your business the way you describe it, instead of the way customers search for it.
Nobody types "premier bespoke property solutions". They type "houses for sale in Buea" or "agence immobilière Douala" or "cheap land Molyko". Those plain phrases are your keywords.
Write down every phrase a customer might type. Include French versions — Cameroon is bilingual and your competitors often ignore one language entirely, which is an opening for you.
Step 4: Put those phrases where they count
For each service you offer, you want a page that clearly targets one main phrase. Place it in:
- The page title (what shows as the blue link in Google)
- The main heading on the page
- The first paragraph of the text
- The meta description (the grey summary text under the link)
- Naturally throughout the content — written for humans, not stuffed
Step 5: Publish content consistently
This is where most businesses stop, and it is exactly why the ones who continue win. Google ranks websites that keep publishing useful content about their field.
Write about what your customers ask you all day. A construction company should write "how much does it cost to build a house in Cameroon". A real estate agency should write "how to verify a land title before buying". Each article is another door into your website from a search nobody else has answered.
Step 6: Speed and mobile
Almost all your visitors are on phones, often on mobile data. A site that takes eight seconds to load loses most of them before it appears, and Google demotes slow sites in results.
- Compress images before uploading — this is usually the single biggest cause of slow pages.
- Use a host with LiteSpeed and NVMe SSD storage.
- Put Cloudflare in front of your site so visitors are served from a nearby location.
- Test your site on a phone using mobile data, not office wifi.
Step 7: Collect reviews
Reviews influence local rankings and they influence customers even more. Ask every satisfied client to leave a Google review — send them the direct link by WhatsApp so it takes them ten seconds. Reply to every review, including negative ones, politely.
Step 8: Build genuine links
When other websites link to yours, Google treats it as a vote of confidence. Realistic ways to earn links in Cameroon:
- Local business directories and chamber of commerce listings
- Association or professional body member pages
- Local news coverage when you do something newsworthy
- Writing guest articles for other websites in your industry
- Partner and supplier websites
How long does this take?
Be realistic. A Google Business Profile can produce calls within weeks. Website rankings for competitive phrases usually take three to six months of consistent work. Anyone promising page one in a fortnight is selling you something that does not exist.
The businesses that win are simply the ones that keep publishing after the others stopped.
